March 16 - The New York Stock Exchange experiences its slowest day ever, with just thirty-one shares being traded.
April 6 - Joseph Smith organizes the Church of the Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church.
May 29 - The Preemption Act is adopted to protect squatters from land speculators and claim jumpers.
July 15 - The Sioux, Sauk and Fox Indians sign a treaty with the U.S., giving the U.S. most of what is now Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.
August 28 - Tom Thumb, the first locomotive built in America, runs from Baltimore to Ellicott's Mill.
October 4 - The first power printing press capable of fine book work is patented by Isaac Adams of Boston, Massachusetts.
